Bio-Char is a soil amendment, in which you must activate Bio-Char using fertilizer added to your soil. General mixing ratio is 5-10% Bio-Char/Fertilizer to soil. Allow the Bio-Char mixture to activate for up to 10 days before using soil, failing to do so will not affect yield. However, it will affect the timing of your yield. For a flower bed, mix Bio-Char and fertilizer to the top 4 inches of your soil at a 5/10% ratio. The ratio of 5/10% depends on the mineral depletion of your soil. If you are using last year's soil, then use a 10% ratio.

Lawn Care: Bio-Char needs to be mixed into the soil, as adding Bio-Char to the top of your lawn will not yield grass growth. Be sure to use in the soil to repair dead grass areas. If you are planting a tree, mix 3 5oz containers of Balltown Bio-Char to the soil before planting. Balltown Bio-Char is offered in different quantities. Be Advised: Bio-Char is dusty and should be used in a well ventilated area. Bio-Char will turn skin and clothing black. Wash with soap and water. Wear a mask when mixing.

Biochar is charcoal that is produced by pyrolysis of biomass, yet in the absence of oxygen, and is used as a soil ameliorant for both carbon sequestration and soil health benefits. Biochar is a stable solid that is rich in carbon and can endure in soil for thousands of years. Biochar is being investigated as a means of carbon sequestration, and it may be a means to mitigate global warming and climate change. It results from processes related to pyrogenic carbon capture and storage (PyCCS).

Biochar may increase soil fertility of acidic soils (low pH soils), increase agricultural productivity, and provide protection against some foliar and soil-borne diseases. Regarding its definition in production, biochar is defined by the International Biochar Initiative as "The solid material obtained from the thermochemical conversion of biomass in an oxygen-limited environment."
